One often wonders what green architecture really is all about and why almost every drawing-room conversation invariably ends up discussing the necessity of making our buildings green. Well, going green is really about making our buildings energy-efficient and eco-friendly, it’s about living in tune with our immediate environment. The next question immediately pops up: What’s the need to live in tune with the environment and trouble ourselves about being eco-friendly with our buildings?
Why not leave the task of environment protection and sustainability to governments and big organizations?

It’s all about precious energy resources:

A realization came the world over during late 1970s and 1980s that the energy resources we have are not unlimited; in fact, they are not going to last too long. The oil prices were already high and coal was being spent recklessly on the so-called developmental activities; it was felt that a drastic reduction in our energy consumption was really needed. A small beginning was made using solar panels by harnessing sunlight, the largest energy resource on the planet. We shall talk about the use of solar panels that were very costly to begin with, and also about other aspects of green architecture in our posts here and also about various modern techniques being used to make the structures energy-efficient. However, it’s a misconception that the concept of green architecture is just about three or four decades old.

An age-old concept:

It may sound funny but the concept of green architecture is almost as old as the mankind itself. Perhaps as soon as the concept of a sanctuary came into existence, the shelters man chose to build were green. Cavemen used eco-friendly material living in tune with the landscape and the forest dwellers constructed tree-houses living in close proximity with their environment. They had their constraints of course, lack of cutting-edge technology being one of them. This same cutting-edge technology is now going to come up with ways to make our buildings greener and our planet a better place to live. We shall continue discussing about the concept of green architecture and talk about the progress made in the field in our next post.
